Filler vs. Botox: which question are you really asking?
Filler and Botox Cosmetic solve different problems. Filler adds or restores volume in approved areas; Botox Cosmetic temporarily relaxes muscles involved in certain expression lines. The right starting point is the concern you see, not a product name.
Start with what changes when your face moves
If the line appears mainly with an expression, a clinician may discuss a neuromodulator. If the concern is a lip, chin, or jawline contour at rest, filler may be part of the conversation. Some concerns involve skin texture or laxity and need a different approach altogether.
The products have different risks
Dermal filler is an implant and carries risks including swelling, bruising, and rare vascular complications. Botox Cosmetic is a prescription medicine with its own labeling and warnings. A qualified clinician should review health history and explain the relevant risks for the exact area.
What to bring to a consultation
Describe one or two changes you want, bring a medication list, and ask for the product name, indication, proposed amount or dose, total cost, aftercare, and complication plan. You can decline a treatment that does not match your goal.
A simple decision map
Ask what changes when your face is still and what changes when you make an expression. A volume concern and a movement-related line can coexist, so the answer is not always one product. If texture, pigment, or loose skin is your main concern, ask whether either injectable will address it at all. This protects you from choosing a familiar brand for the wrong problem.
What not to infer from a photo
A before-and-after image does not tell you the product, dose, lighting, healing stage, or the patient’s anatomy. Ask the clinician to explain the goal for your face and the range of plausible outcomes. Get the total plan in writing before comparing prices across practices.
